Construction of the Las Lomas High School Memorial Outdoor Classroom was the culmination of a year-long fundraising campaign and school activities in honor of Gavin Powell and Matt Miller, two students who died while rafting in a storm-swollen local creek.

"I just wanted to offer a personal note of thanks for your contributions and especially for your leadership on the Las Lomas project. I was very heartened to see the level of participation among students and parents last Saturday.  But I was really moved at the level of commercial contributions.  And your guys were great -- never once alluded to how much faster they could have done it without our "help." My daughter Katharine (Kat Tabler-Miller -- she's shown in the Channel 5 news piece) was very close to Gavin, so the accident was a huge loss for our family. Events like these and seeing the volunteer and community support definitely help the healing. I expect and hope you'll get other notes like this from the school and class leadership. But I wanted to make sure you knew that your contributions were noticed and appreciated by this grateful parent." - Harry Miller

The whole community stepped up to support the project through donations and fundraising along with the TLC for Kids Sports team.  Additional major donors included Berkeley Cement, Inc., Central Concrete Supply Co., Inc., Mag Trucking, LH Voss, Syar Industries, and Valley Crest Landscape.   Construction includes concrete pathways leading to a circular seating area. The 5,000sf area was planted with native drought tolerant plants and included other quiet seating areas for the students.  The entire space was dedicated to “nature, relationships and education”; all things Miller and Powell adored.

THANK YOU TO THE 150 VOLUNTEERS, MOSTLY STUDENTS, WHO CAME DOWN TO LEND A HAND ON SATURDAY APRIL 28TH!
